Teaching & Learning
Enthusiastic, engaging, evolutionary, and energetic are four of many words to describe my teaching. Students of all levels & abilities from years 7 to 13 (and teachers) benefit from my 20 years of teaching which means the students are deepening and enriching their learning of maths, becoming more engaged with their learning and understanding the skills they have learnt through: The Standards Units, matching, classifying, treasure hunts, dominoes and other puzzles, hands on activities, investigations, nrich puzzles, CAME, people maths, coaching each other, working in groups, by being given an answer and designing a question for it, conversational maths, writing explanations, flipping the classroom, or just seeing the real life relevance of maths which I do by bringing the maths into the classroom or taking the classroom outside. All these activities support: the principles of Assessment for Learning; good teaching practice; a range of students’ learning needs; and the skills they have learnt. Maths text books are very rarely used.
Teachers learn from me (I run insets) and I learn from them (we share good practice). Caring for the whole child is very important to me. Learning and developing different ways to make the teaching and learning of maths engaging and relevant, and training others in how to do this, is one of my many strengths. I have run CPD training for maths teachers and teachers of other subjects and presented to other maths departments at our regional conference. I have run many different extracurricular activities and trips such as: support classes, yoga, cross country, engineering, surfing, skiing, hiking, canoeing and touring on a bicycle. I have a lot to offer the whole school community.

ò Learning is based upon building on and linking to prior knowledge and learning how to use this knowledge to adapt to new situations. All students can build on what they have learnt and learn to their full potential when encouraged and supported.
ò Learning is enhanced through exploration or a theme, by using concrete materials, calculators, computers, investigations, explorations, bringing maths into the classroom, taking the classroom outside, making maths relevant, flipping the classroom, using a variety of resources or by observation.

ò Involving the school community reinforces the value of maths.
ò Showing respect for one another builds rapport in and out of the classroom, a calm learning environment and is enriched when there is a diverse mix of cultures.
